Pest Control FAQs

Have questions about pest control, treatment frequency, preparation, or what to expect afterward? Here are answers to some of the questions Deter Pest Solutions receives most often from Southwest Florida homeowners and businesses.

General Pest Control Questions

How often should my home receive pest control?

Quarterly service is appropriate for many Southwest Florida homes. However, the ideal frequency depends on the property, surrounding environment, pest species, and severity of the activity. Certain infestations and commercial properties may require more frequent visits.

Do you treat both the inside and outside?

Yes. Initial service may include both interior and exterior treatment based on what we find during the inspection. Ongoing service generally emphasizes exterior prevention while addressing interior activity whenever necessary.

Do I need to leave during treatment?

Usually not for a standard general pest treatment. Certain specialized services may require people and pets to leave treated areas temporarily. We will explain any precautions before beginning the service.

Is pest control safe for children and pets?

We select and apply products according to their labels and keep treatments targeted to the appropriate areas. Children and pets may need to remain away from treated surfaces until they are dry or for the specific period stated on the product label.

Do I need to prepare my home before service?

Most general pest services require very little preparation. Providing access to problem areas, removing pet food from treatment areas, and telling us where activity has been observed can help. German roaches, fleas, bed bugs, and certain other infestations require more extensive preparation.

Will rain affect my pest-control treatment?

Light rain does not necessarily ruin an exterior treatment, especially when products are applied to protected areas. Heavy rain may affect certain applications or prevent us from completing parts of the service properly. We will adjust or reschedule when weather conditions could compromise the treatment.

Why am I seeing more bugs after heavy rain?

Heavy rain can flood nesting and hiding areas in lawns, mulch, drains, and landscaping. Ants, roaches, millipedes, and other pests may move toward foundations, garages, lanais, and indoor areas in search of shelter.

How quickly should I expect results?

Some pest activity improves quickly, while established colonies or infestations take longer. Ants, rodents, termites, fleas, German roaches, and other specialized problems may require preparation, follow-up visits, or time for the treatment to affect the entire population.

Is it normal to see pests after treatment?

Yes, some activity immediately after treatment can be normal. Pests may be disturbed from hiding places or encounter treated areas before dying. Continued or increasing activity outside the expected treatment period should be reported so we can evaluate it.

Treatments and services

What pests are included in general pest control?

Deter’s general pest service addresses common household pests such as ants, American and Australian roaches, spiders, earwigs, silverfish, and millipedes. German roaches, termites, rodents, fleas, bed bugs, mosquitoes, and certain yard infestations require separate or specialized treatment.

Why do ants return after I spray them?

The ants you see may represent only a small portion of a much larger colony. Some colonies extend through lawns, pavers, mulch beds, walls, or neighboring properties. Using the wrong spray can also scatter certain ants or interfere with bait, which is why identification matters.

Are large Florida roaches always coming from the sewer?

No. American roaches are commonly associated with drains, sewer or septic systems, and damp environments. Australian roaches are more closely associated with outdoor vegetation and landscaping. Identifying the species helps determine where we should inspect and treat.

Do you remove spider webs around the home?

Accessible web removal may be included with general exterior service. We also treat appropriate areas around eaves, doors, windows, lanais, and other locations where spiders hide or build webs.

Do you provide rodent control and seal entry points?

Yes. Depending on the property, rodent control may include an inspection, trapping, protected exterior bait stations, sanitation recommendations, and exclusion of identified entry points. Trapping or baiting alone cannot permanently correct an opening that allows rodents inside.

Do you treat both subterranean and drywood termites?

Yes. Deter provides treatment options for both subterranean and drywood termites. Because they live and spread differently, we must identify the termite and inspect the affected area before recommending a treatment.

Do you provide mosquito treatments?

Yes. We inspect for possible breeding sites and shaded resting areas around the property. Treatment options may include targeted mosquito applications and In2Care mosquito stations when appropriate.

Do you service businesses and commercial properties?

Yes. Deter provides customized pest-control plans for offices, retail locations, storage facilities, warehouses, multifamily properties, and other commercial buildings. Service frequency depends on the facility, its operations, and its pest pressure.
